The village of Mohelnice nad Jizerou is located in the Mladá Boleslav district, about 4 km north of Mnichovo Hradiště, at the confluence of the Jizera and Mohelka rivers. The first written mention of the village dates back to 1352. The dominant feature of the village is a church with a cemetery and a statue of Christ on a richly decorated plinth from 1884. In the middle of the village, in the walled cemetery, stands the Romanesque tribune church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It dates back to the third quarter of the 12th century. The church is an unplastered building made of square masonry, which gives the building a special historical character.
On this regular masonry there is a strange protruding relief of a human head. This scene gave rise to a legend: it is said to be the head of a Turkish woman who was brought back as his mistress from the Turkish campaign to Turkey by a young lord from the opposite castle Zásadka. Unfortunately, he was captured during the fighting and never returned. The ruins of Zásadka Castle can be seen behind the village square, where there are several other historical monuments.
Several old water mills have been preserved in the village and its surroundings. In the centre of the village, on the right bank of the Mohelka River, there is a timbered building – the former Mazur mill no. 3. An interesting feature of this place is the unique hydroelectric power station, which was built here in 1914 and still reminds of the time when water was the main source of energy for local industry. The statue of St. Wenceslas stands by the former mill No. 44, to which in the past regular processions of believers from the surrounding villages were held.
Mohelnice nad Jizerou is also rich in folk architecture. Among the most valuable are houses No. 5, 6, 8 and 11, which have preserved their original character to this day. In addition to these buildings, there is also a First Republic building of the former school, which today serves as the municipal office. Another interesting feature is the stone bridge over the Mohelka River, built in 1926, which with its historical appearance completes the overall character of the village.
Mohelnice is a popular destination for tourists and history lovers who come here not only to see the sights, but also the beautiful nature that surrounds this picturesque village.
