Lány

The Baroque chateau in the village of Lány in the middle of the Křivoklát forests near Prague has been the official summer residence of the Presidents of the Czech Republic since 1921. It is currently open to the public in the form of guided tours. Visitors can also visit the large chateau park and the palm greenhouse from 1879.

The oldest written mention of Lány dates back to 1392. A wooden fortress stood here already then. At the end of the 16th century, Emperor Rudolf II bought Lány and had a Renaissance hunting castle built on the site of the original fortress. At the end of the 17th century, the Wallenstein family bought the castle. Count Jan Josef von Wallenstein had the chateau interiors renovated. From the beginning of the 18th century, Lány was in the possession of the Fürstenbergs until 1921, when the Czechoslovak state purchased the Lány castle for the representative purposes of the head of state.

Princess Marie Anna, née Wallenstein, married to Prince William Arnost of Fürstenberg, had the rococo chateau chapel of the Holy Name of Jesus built in 1748-1752 at a cost of 14,344 gold coins, which has served as the parish church of Lány since 1850. At the time of the chapel’s construction, the castle was still surrounded by a moat, and since the chapel was to be connected to the eastern wing of the castle, it was necessary to lead a covered connecting corridor from the first floor of the castle through arcaded arches.

The castle park was first mentioned around 1770. Its current appearance is influenced by the modifications of Josip Plečnik. Plečnik’s most striking work in the park is the wall on the eastern side of the pond dam, which includes an impressive fountain. It consists of five Doric columns decorated with bronze lion heads, from which water flows into the fountain and then falls into the pond as one massive stream.
